Indiana is very fortunate to have many natural lakes, streams and rivers. Our state is also dotted with several man made ponds, lakes and reservoirs including Lake Monroe shown here. Lake Monroe is Indiana's largest lake and is located in southern Indiana just south and east of Bloomington, Indiana. Many of the reservoirs are used for flood control by the US Army Corps of Engineers. Soouth end of Lake Monroe Click here to go to the Monroe County Gallery

Many of the reservoirs in Indiana, like Lake Monroe, Monroe Lake Dam Discharge Click here to go to the Monroe County Galleryare under the control of the US Army  Corps of Engineers and are used to help with flood control in our rivers. The lake levels fluctuate with the need for flood control and tend to be high in the spring, normal in summer and low in winter. This rule isn't always true but is more so than not. You can bet that if the rivers are flooded then the dams are locked up tight to hold the excess water to prevent further flooding.
