The Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore

Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore, authorized by Congress in 1966, is located approximately 50 miles southeast of Chicago, Illinois in the counties of Lake, Porter, and LaPorte in Northwest Indiana. The national lakeshore runs for nearly 25 miles along southern Lake Michigan, bordered by Michigan City, Indiana on the east, and Gary on the west. The park contains approximately 15,000 acres, 2,182 of which are located in Indiana Dunes State Park and managed by the Indiana Department of Natural Resources. Miles of beaches, sand dunes, bog, wetlands, woodland forests, an 1830's French Canadian homestead, and a working 1900 era farm combine to make the national lakeshore a unique setting. Whiting, Indiana

Whiting 4th of July Festival and Parade

Whiting's 4th of July celebration is second to none! One of the oldest continuous 4th of July parades is held in our fair city as people gather on Indianapolis Blvd. and down through 119th Street to Whiting Park, our traditional parade route. Bands, floats, civic organizations, clowns and horses are all part of each year's exciting patriotic parade.

And Whiting's celebration includes not only the parade but a huge amusement carnival held at Lakefront Park during the 4th of July week.. The celebration on the Lakefront features traditional children's and adult rides and amusements. There's a Beer Garden with live entertainment too. And nothing is as exciting as the final Fireworks right here on the shores of Lake Michigan each year.
